And since September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we are spreading awareness and raising money during #BIPOCVampDay for Sickle Cell Disease research and treatment. Last year we raised around $2.2k in our online fundraiser. This year, we’re hoping to raise even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sickle Cell Disease is a red blood cell disorder is common among those whose ancestors came from sub-Saharan Africa; Spanish-speaking regions in the Western Hemisphere (South America, the Caribbean & Central America); Saudi Arabia; India & Mediterranean countries such as Turkey, Greece, and Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healthy red blood cells are round, and they move through small blood vessels to carry oxygen to all parts of the body. In someone who has SCD, the red blood cells become hard and sticky and look like a C-shaped farm tool called a \u201csickle\u201d. The sickle cells die early, which causes a constant shortage of red blood cells. Also, when they travel through small blood vessels, they get stuck and clog the blood flow. This can cause pain and other serious problems such infection, acute chest syndrome and stroke.(www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/sicklecell\/facts.html<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
